A large number of stray animals are handed in to the JSPCA or picked up by our inspectors on a daily basis. This is either due to willful neglect of the animal or due to accidental circumstances.
The JSPCA is an official City of Johannesburg municipal pound for small and large animals. We are obliged by law to keep stray animals for a certain period of time (96 hours in the case of cats and dogs). Thereafter, ownership of the animal reverts to the JSPCA.
If you have lost an animal, please contact our kennels department ASAP. Provide all the relevant details pertaining to yourself and the animal to assist the matching process. Obviously, if the animal has an identification collar, tag or microchip, then the chance of a reunion is much greater.
It is also advisable to call other surrounding SPCA’s as well as local veterinarians and other animal welfare organisations.
