Total Disregard for Animals with Festive Season Celebrations

It appears as if people showed a complete disregard to animals with the celebrations this year.

We have had a substantial increase in the number of animals admitted to our kennels this festive season.   We have had a large increase in the number of animals admitted into our kennels compared to other years.  Over 450 animals were brought into the Krugersdorp and Johannesburg SPCA from the 1 December 2011 - 3 January 2012.  Majority of these animals did not have an form identification.

On New Years Even and New Years day, there was a high volume of calls relating to the use of fireworks and stray animals in the road.  Ronald Ramalata, Chief Inspector at the Johannesburg SPCA was called out to a rescue on New Years Day, where the dog had managed to get stuck between precast walls from trying to escape the fireworks.  With help from a neighbour the precast wall was "unpacked" to free the dog.  Luckily there was no injury.

The Chances of finding your lost pet are good, if you follow the correct procedures and of course ensure that your pet has identification such as a microchip.  Remember it is the responsibility of the owner of the animal to report their animals missing to their local SPCA, veterinarians and animal welfare societies.

Be responsible! Ensure your pets are microchipped and of course educate your friends, family and neighbours, regarding the effects Fireworks have on Animals

Happy New Year

The Johannesburg SPCA would like to wish all our supporters a very Happy and Prosperous 2012.

Unfortunately many people celebrated the coming of 2012 with a bang. If your animal is missing please contact your local SPCA, animal welfare society and veterinarians to report this.
