World Cup Soccer Fever

The World Cup Soccer event that our country hosted has come and gone. Not only should all South Africans give themselves a pat on the back for the manner in which we welcomed our guests, but very importantly, we should feel proud of  the example we set in terms of the standard of our animal welfare that was observed by our quests.

‚ÄúMy comment stems from a discussion I had with a  journalist / reporter from El Salvador covering the 2010 World Cup event who requested  a TV interview with us.  I was told that the interview material will be used as part of a documentary on South Africa. The reason why we were approached  was that they (TV crew) were very surprised not to find stray / feral dogs roaming the streets and they wanted to establish what we do to control the stray / feral dog population‚Äù says Dirk van Niekerk, JSPCA CEO.

‚ÄúFrom our discussion it was clear that cruelty to stray / feral animals is prevalent  and is directly associated with the absence of animal welfare societies and the lack of control of the stray / feral animals in and around Mexico, Honduras and El Salvador.  We were praised for the work that we do in South Africa.‚Äù

The staff of the Johannesburg SPCA, took time to show their  support of the Bafana Bafana team on Wednesday the 9th June 2010 at 12h00.  Staff joined the crowds on the Corners of Benray Road and Turf Club Street, waving the South African Flag, the Johannesburg SPCA banners and blowing the vuvuzelas.

It was great fun  Well done Bafana Bafana you did your best!
